They think of one Realtor, plumber, brand of trash bags, Chinese restaurant, etc. By repetition, outdoor advertising makes your company top of mind for your category. Netflix streaming took off because one thing in the beginning. It wasn’t the content, because the networks had far better programs and movies. It wasn’t the quality – early streaming was lower resolution than digital cable and prone to hang during buffering. The reason was no commercials. People were mainly paying to get rid of the commercials. The same is true for satellite radio and pop-up blockers on web browsers. People sort their mail over the trashcan and skim their email inbox subject headers before opening important messages. All day long, we are trying to tune out advertisers and can have negative feelings towards those that interrupt us the most. Billboards are different – consumers choose to look at them to break up the monotony of a long drive or to find a nearby restaurant or gas station for a pit-stop.
